The amount of taxes and interest we pay and inflated education and health costs in a lifetime is shocking.
The average American will pay $480,407 in taxes throughout their lifetime and $130,462 in interest. A total of $610,00. If you work for 40 years that means you are paying $15,000 a year. $300 a week or $45 a day.
When I dropped out in the 70s, I worked out by not paying taxes or interest I didn’t need much money to actually live: some food and clothes.
People pay an enormous amount of money in taxes for governments to wage war and pay off their cronies. I would even suggest, looking at how America left billions of dollars of equipment in Afghanistan, they don’t care about your hard-earned money. Yes, it was your money before they took it. And big corporations don’t pay any of this.
And how your taxes pay for politicians to just argue and talk around and around and achieve nothing.
Same with interest. I remember the interest on home loans in Australia in the 70s got as high as 20%. Some religions like Islam forbid the paying of interest on loans for a good reason.
There is a very good reason to think about how much money in direct and indirect taxes and interest weighs you down and obfuscates your REAL income.
I have included some statistics below which are bad enough. But, my own thinking is that over 60% of your income goes down the toilet. Say you earn $15 an hour. Around $8.50 of that is not yours. This leaves you with $6.50 an hour, $250 a week to pay your bills which is another form of graft and corruption by powerful universities, doctors and pharmaceutical companies.
You are going to work to earn money so you can give it all away to a corrupt system.
The best way to get around this ‘System’ is to not buy anything, not work much, and heal and educate yourself. Work sometimes for cash, buy a surfboard and a van and surf your life away. Another option is to save money and build a mudbrick house and a vegetable garden. Then quietly withdraw from the monster that is sucking the blood out of you every minute.
Study what you need to know, especially herbs and nutrition to stay healthy. In the 60s doctors prescribed cigarettes for lung complaints.
I am speaking from personal experience. I have few possessions, love photography, playing music and writing. I used to be a photography teacher in a college. Now I am happy using a canon G16, an old Acer laptop and a cheap ukulele. I also have a large jar of ginger, turmeric and Andrographis for my health that I take every day. Total value $300. The sum total of my possessions and I am over 60. And I often reflect that Buddha and Jesus had even less than me.

We previously worked out how much tax you’ll pay in your lifetime and it was shocking. But, we wanted to take this analysis further. What other hidden costs do we not consider in our lives?
Our credit card debts, car finances, mortgages, and even student loans will all slowly but surely grow interest fees over time. We wanted to find out what this looks like for the average American, and how it differs per state to ultimately find out how much we are paying in interest fees over our entire life.
Key statistics:
The average American will pay $130,462 in interest fees over their lifetime
The state worst hit by interest fees is Hawaii ($272,326), followed by California ($234,337)
The state that spends the least on interest payments is Iowa ($93,416), almost 2.9 times less than Hawaiians
Car buyers in Texas will pay the most in interest ($22,475) on their auto loans, with Massachusetts drivers paying over three times less($7,183) than Texans
Alaskans will pay $7,517 in credit card interest fees, the highest of any state, while Iowans will pay $3,214, the lowest in the country

The U.S. government collects over $5.3 trillion in taxes each year, but how much will the average American pay in taxes throughout their lifetime?
Using expenditure and income data from sources such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as average property prices and automotive costs, we’ve analyzed just how much tax the average person will pay in each state.
Key statistics
The average American will pay $480,407 in taxes throughout their lifetime.
That’s an average of 34.49% of all lifetime earnings spent on taxes.
Residents of New Jersey will pay the most in lifetime taxes ($1,035,725) and people in Tennessee will pay the least ($284,624).
Tax on earnings is where most tax will come from, with the average American paying $255,364 in a lifetime.
Owning a car will cost an additional $26,071 in tax payments alone, across the average 9.4 cars owned in a lifetime.
Tax on property will set you back an additional $174,251 above the property price and maintenance.
Taxpayers in Washington will pay the most on everyday expenses ($39,337), followed by those in California ($37,347).
