You are more than religion
I was talking to a monk the other day and he said he wasn’t any particular religion.
He said his culture has had many different religions over the millennium, and he, like many others took the best parts of each one.
He went on to say that everything ultimately comes back to us. I figured he meant being a ‘believer’ in one religion: Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Jew etc. was not sufficient with regards to doing the work on yourself. Christianity’s forgiveness of sins is a lame way to work on yourself: there is some temporary relief from this though.
He had said something incredibly profound. I thought about it all day. Religions are like guides and teachers. They give us some ideas for the desired outcomes and potential higher and happier states of living. They do not achieve anything without personal effort. Just belonging to one is meaningless. For example. Many Muslims will (though should not kill) kill blasphemers and go crazy about this topic. Why would they? They are not God. So, they have a long way to go if they want to develop true compassion and love within themselves, instead of being part of a crazy, brainwashed group of killers.
This is why many of us who have been to hell and back and have done the mileage are so heartfelt. Trusting our own inner wisdom, intuition and feelings more than anyone else even if and when a higher force has helped us along the way.
This helped me a lot because I am interested in all spiritual teachings but belong to none. I am not a… I often feel separate, not belonging, confused and sad not having a religious family: not anymore.
Now I know, at long last, no matter the religion or spiritual teaching, I have to work on myself. Become a better person and develop my higher self and be more loving, kind and compassionate, including to myself. And there is help from all the spiritual people that have gone before me.
This also explains why religious texts are so contradictory, and waffle on and on (they are written mostly by humens).
The books are only a record of other people’s experiences that give us insight and guidance on how to grow and prosper: like any good book or teacher still living.
No more ah-ha moments, time to deal with my demons, head on and get real hard-won results: like losing weight, stopping drinking and smoking, eating organic food, helping a charity, saving the environment, saving money, being grateful for your life, the amazing food, the beautiful birds, animals and trees, and loving your family and friends.
Time to get real, I say to myself pretty much every day.

I am a retired Photography Teacher, Refugee Settlement Manager, and Builder. For the past 10 years, I have been teaching part-time, writing books, taking photos and doing lots of research.
All the books I write come from experience and research. Yes, in my life so far I have worked with refugees, taught art, built houses, studied herbs, and health. I have also studied astrology spirituality including meditation, animal welfare, and poetry.
I sincerely hope that you can gain valuable information from my books (usually short and sweet introductions) to different facets of life I have visited.
