Migraines
My daughter suffers from Migraines so I looked at some solutions.
Here are some of the things you should do straight away
More omega 3 and less omega 6 oils
Make a point of eating foods like cod, tuna, sardines, spinach salads, hummus and avocados, and cook with olive oil instead of corn, soybean and canola oils.
Sniff peppermint oil if you feel stressed.
Eat more ACE inhibitors
There are natural ACE inhibitors and alternatives to blood pressure medications that you can add to your diet, such as pomegranate juice, flaxseed, beet juice, apple juice, prunes, dark chocolate, kiwis and blueberries
***
A recent study shows migraine sufferers who give up vegetable oils and consume more fatty fish are able to reduce the severity and frequency of migraines through diet alone.
A diet higher in omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna, helped study participants who were having frequent migraines — defined as having an average of more than 16 days per month — to reduce the number of headaches as well as lower pain levels.
Scientists found that among three study groups consuming three different diets, the diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish produced between 30% and 40% reductions in total headache hours per day and overall headache days per month, compared to the others. That group also experienced lower levels of pain, according to study results.
ACE inhibitors
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
ACE inhibitors are commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure, heart problems and other conditions. Find out how they work and their potential side effects.
By Mayo Clinic Staff
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors help relax your veins and arteries to lower your blood pressure. ACE inhibitors prevent an enzyme in your body from producing angiotensin II, a substance that narrows your blood vessels. This narrowing can cause high blood pressure and force your heart to work harder. Angiotensin II also releases hormones that raise your blood pressure.
Many ACE inhibitors are available. The best one for you depends on your health and other factors. For example, people with chronic kidney disease may benefit from having an ACE inhibitor as one of their medications.
Natural ACE inhibitors
pomegranate juice, flaxseed, beet juice, apple juice, prunes, dark chocolate, kiwis and blueberries
Examples of Pharmaceutical ACE inhibitors include:
Benazepril (Lotensin)
Captopril
Enalapril (Vasotec)
Fosinopril
Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril)
Moexipril
Perindopril
Quinapril (Accupril)
Ramipril (Altace)
Trandolapril
When ACE inhibitors are used In addition to high blood pressure, ACE inhibitors prevent, treat or improve symptoms in conditions such as:
Coronary artery disease
Heart failure
Diabetes
Certain chronic kidney diseases
Heart attacks
Scleroderma — a disease that involves hardening of the skin and connective tissues
Migraines
Your doctor may prescribe other medications in addition to an ACE inhibitor, such as a diuretic or calcium channel blocker. ACE inhibitors shouldn’t be taken with an angiotensin receptor blocker or with a direct renin inhibitor.
ACE inhibitors work better for younger people than for older people. They also work better for white people than for black people. Your doctor may recommend a different medication.
Side effects
Doctors commonly prescribe ACE inhibitors because they don’t often cause side effects.
If side effects do occur, they may include:
Dry cough
Increased potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia)Fatigue
Dizziness from blood pressure going too low
Headaches
Loss of taste
In rare cases, particularly for black people, women and smokers, ACE inhibitors can cause some areas of the tissues to swell (angioedema). If swelling occurs in the throat, it can be life-threatening.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve), decrease the effectiveness of ACE inhibitors. Taking an occasional dose of these medications shouldn’t affect how your ACE inhibitor works, but talk to your doctor if you regularly take NSAIDs.
ACE inhibitors can be harmful to you and your baby during pregnancy. If you’re pregnant or plan to become pregnant, talk to your doctor about other options to treat high blood pressure.
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto benefits have been known for a long time. The saw palmetto plant was used for medicine by the Native Americans of the Southeastern U.S., and in the early 20th century, men used the berries to treat urinary tract problems and increase sperm production — in addition to maintaining prostate health.
Today, saw palmetto supplements are one of the most commonly consumed supplements by men with prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) thanks to the numerous saw palmetto benefits. In fact, in 2011, over $18 million in saw palmetto was sold in the U.S., ranking it third among herbal dietary supplements.
Saw palmetto benefits have the power to treat colds, coughs and sore throat, and this supplement works as a natural remedy for asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome and migraine headaches. It’s also used to increase urine flow, promote relaxation and enhance sexual drive.
Saw palmetto extract is taken from the deep purple berries of the saw palmetto fan palm, which is known as Serenoa repens. It grows as a tree or shrub and has lush, green leaves that fan out from its thorn stem.
It can reach heights of 10 feet in warm climates, with leaf clusters that can reach two feet or more.
Other common names for saw palmetto include American dwarf palm tree and cabbage palm. The plant is a native of West Indies, and in the U.S., saw palmetto grows in the warm climates of the southeast coast, from South Carolina to throughout Florida.
Saw palmetto benefits have been known for centuries, and the plant has been used in traditional, eclectic and alternative medicine. Its active ingredients include fatty acids, plant sterols and flavonoids.
The berries also contain high molecular weight polysaccharides (sugars), which may reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system — thus adding immune system booster to the list of saw palmetto benefits.
The most important factor about saw palmetto is that it’s been shown to slow the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, so taking it is a strong step to improve prostate health. This enzyme converts the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) — a sex steroid and androgen hormone.
While DHT is important because it plays a role in male development, it also contributes to many common health issues in men, such as loss of libido, an enlarged prostate and hair loss. By taking saw palmetto supplements or using the extract of this beneficial plant, you inhibit the production of this hormone and avoid these issues that are seen in middle-aged and older males.
Saw palmetto berries may also help relieve chronic pain and migraines and reserve hair loss, in addition to other saw palmetto benefits.
Peppermint oil
Applying peppermint oil to the temples, forehead and back of the jaw helps to provide fast relief (under thirty minutes) for headaches and migraines. Put away your over the counter medication and give peppermint a go.

Turmeric with a dash of black pepper
Curcumin health benefits (an ingredient in turmeric)
First, it’s important to differentiate between turmeric and curcumin.
Curcumin is the active ingredient/compound in turmeric and has been used in herbal medicine for over 4,000 years in many parts of the world.
As a spice, ground turmeric has extremely high antioxidant content. Its ORAC value is 127,068. Of course, this means it may be a powerful tool for fighting cellular damage from free radicals.
Scientific research has suggested there may be benefits relating to:
• inflammation and aging related to such
• enhanced cognitive function reduce headaches
• muscle performance and recovery
• knee osteoarthritis
• heart disease (including atherosclerosis and lowering LDL cholesterol)
• blood clotting and endothelial function
• neurodegenerative conditions (including Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, and multiple sclerosis)
• cancer research
• indigestion (including dyspepsia, bloating, and gas)
• ulcerative colitis and stomach ulcers
• antibacterial and antiviral properties
• uveitis (a form of eye inflammation)
Given that a plethora of studies1 2 have inferred the benefits of curcumin in the diet, supplement companies have created an entire industry around this compound. But which products will give you the most bioavailable dose? Let’s answer this the best we can…
Supplement formulations with turmeric
Black pepper
Composition: 1-2% piperine in long pepper, 5-10% in commercial black and white peppers
We’re including this non-proprietary ingredient on the list since many of the lower-end supplements use it.
Piperine is an alkaloid found in black pepper, and is notorious for its ability to increase the bioavailability for an array of nutrients.
It does this by inhibiting key enzymes for metabolism, preventing substances from leaving cells, decreasing intestinal activity, and stimulating useful amino-acids. All of these changes work to keep substances in the body’s cells longer.
In the case of curcumin, several studies have demonstrated how piperine aids in absorption. One such study published in Planta Med in 1998 demonstrated that the bioavailability of curcumin with piperine in humans increased up to 2,000% (yes, that’s two thousand percent!) compared to taking curcumin alone3.
Tryptophan
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and is needed to maintain optimum health. Tryptophan must be obtained from the diet. The unusual indole side chain of tryptophan is also the nucleus of the important neurotransmitter serotonin, which is biosynthesized from tryptophan. The aromatic portion of tryptophan also serves as an ultraviolet marker for detection of this amino acid either separately, or incorporated into proteins and enzymes, via ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Tryptophan is incorporated into proteins and enzymes at the molar rate of 1.1 percent compared to other amino acids, making it the rarest amino acid found in proteins.
Tryptophan is required for the production of niacin (vitamin B3). It is used by the human body to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is important for normal nerve and brain function. Serotonin is important in sleep, stabilizing emotional moods, pain control, inflammation, intestinal peristalsis, etc.
It is further important in controlling hyperactivity in children, assists in alleviating stress, helps with weight loss and reducing appetite. It has been found that people suffering from migraine headaches have abnormal levels of tryptophan. In this case, supplementation may be helpful.
A shortage of tryptophan, combined with a shortage of magnesium, may be a contributing factor to heart artery spasms.
Supplementation with high dosage of Tryptophan could lead to gastrointestinal upsets, headaches, sleepiness and anxiety.
Good dietary sources for this amino acid are cottage cheese, meat, soy protein and peanuts.
More Omega -3 and far less Omega – 6 Oils
Omega-3s and omega-6s are both considered essential fatty acids — critical for health, and because our bodies can’t make them, they must be obtained from foods. Historically humans consumed roughly equivalent amounts of both fatty acids. But the typical American diet today tends to contain a much larger proportion of omega-6 fats. Some health authorities see this as a good thing: Vegetable oils and other rich sources of omega-6 fats have been found in many studies to be beneficial for cardiovascular health.
The authors of the new study wanted to know: Could a diet that boosts omega-3 fats while lowering omega-6 fats make life easier for people burdened by frequent migraine headaches?
For Heather, the benefits of a change in diet were striking: After a few months of increasing her fish intake and avoiding many common vegetable oils, she noticed that her headaches had all but disappeared. Other people on the new diet also reported fewer headaches. Although the trial ended after 16 weeks, Heather has remained on it ever since. Gone are the days when she ate foods like fried chicken, French fries and potato chips that were cooked in vegetables oils rich in omega-6 fats.
She now makes a point of eating foods like cod, tuna, sardines, spinach salads, hummus and avocados, and she cooks with olive oil instead of corn, soybean and canola oils.
“I haven’t had a migraine, not even a mild one, in over two years,” she said. “Going from having one a week to not having any was just amazing to me.”
Flaxseed Oil
All foods rich in magnesium are beneficial for controlling migraine. Food items, including flax seeds, chia seeds and cashews, are good sources of magnesium. If you include these in your day-to-day diet your chances of headache and migraine, in particular, will decrease.
How to Get Rid of a Migraine Naturally by Dr Axe
There are many options for how to get rid of a migraine, and different things work for different people. Try the following ways for how to get rid of a migraine to see what works best for you.
1. Foods that Help Migraines
Foods that can help prevent or treat migraines include the following:
Omega-3 Foods
Nuts, seeds and wild-caught fish, such as salmon or sardines, help control blood flow and lower inflammation.
Organic, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
These foods are high in magnesium and other key electrolytes, which are especially important for controlling blood flow and muscular functions, along with preventing an electrolyte imbalance. They also provide antioxidants that help decrease inflammation, counteract effects of toxin exposure and balance hormones.
Magnesium-Rich Foods
Some of the best sources include spinach, swiss chard, pumpkin seeds, yogurt, kefir, almonds, black beans, avocado, figs, dates, bananas and sweet potatoes.
Clean, Lean Protein Foods
These include grass-fed beef and poultry, wild-caught fish, beans and legumes.
Foods with B vitamins
Some research suggests that people with migraines could benefit from consuming more B vitamins, especially vitamin B2 (riboflavin). (2) Sources of riboflavin include organ meats and other meat, certain dairy products, vegetables like green leafy veggies, beans and legumes, and nuts and seeds.
2. Foods to Avoid that Make Migraines Worse
Some researchers believe that up to 40 percent of migraines could be avoided if people improved their diets and avoided triggers. A poor diet, high in things like processed grains and sodium, is one of the biggest triggers for migraine symptoms. Foods that can make migraine headache pain worse include: (3, 4)
• Added sugar
• Refined grain products
• Conventional dairy products
• Aged cheeses
• Pickled or cured fish
• Breads or pastries made with gluten and yeast
• Red wine and other types of alcohol (especially when consumed in large amounts)
• Chocolate (contains a chemical called phenylethylamine that sometimes causes blood flow changes that trigger headaches)
• Caffeinated drinks (for some people, about one cup of coffee or tea daily can help headaches, but withdrawal or drinking more are usually problematic)
• Eggs (especially if someone has an unknown allergy)
• Artificial food additives and artificial sweeteners, including aspartame
• Flavor enhancers and preservatives in packaged foods, including MSG
• High amounts of sodium, especially when coupled with low intake of other electrolytes
• Very cold foods
• Nitrates found in processed meats like hot dogs, cold cuts, salami, bacon and ham
• Fried foods and fast foods, especially those made with MSG (such as Chinese food)
• For some people, certain types of beans and legumes (including lima beans and snow peas, which contain natural amine chemicals)
Other dietary tips for how to get rid of a migraine include avoiding extreme dieting or skipping meals, preventing dehydration, avoiding drinking too much caffeine throughout the day, and maintaining normal blood sugar levels by eating something balanced every few hours (especially if you’re diabetic).
3. Supplements for Migraines and Headaches
If you suffer from migraines or other types of headaches often, you can likely benefit from taking the following supplements: (5)
• Omega-3 fish oils: Some studies have found that omega-3 supplements can help decrease severity and frequency and migraines. (6)
• Magnesium
• Vitamin B2
• 5-HTP: An amino acid that can help improve serotonin levels and lower frequency and severity of pain.
• Feverfew: An herb that helps reduce the frequency of migraine headaches and headache symptoms, including pain, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and noise.
• Kudzu extract: An herbal treatment with over 70 phytochemicals or phytonutrients.
• Melatonin: Can help improve sleep quality when used in moderation.
• Capsaicin cream: Apply a small amount of capsaicin cream to the inside of your nostril, or use a nose spray containing capsaicin, which works by blocking nerve pain signals. (7)
• Medicinal mushrooms
4. Essential Oils for Treating Headache Pain
Essential oils have a variety of uses, and you can add essential oils to the list for how to get rid of a migraine. They’re natural painkillers, help lower stress or anxiety, reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, help balance hormones, and lower muscular tension.
Essential oils can be applied to the painful side of the head, neck and elsewhere to soothe muscular tension and stress. You can also numb any pain directly by applying several drops of an oil to a heated towel (or simply use a heating pad or ice pack applied to the head and neck for about 15 minutes at a time).
Essential oils for headaches include:
Peppermint: Reduces pain and inflammation. Works by having a natural cooling effect on the skin, inhibiting muscle contractions and stimulating blood flow around the head when applied topically.
Lavender: Soothes stress and anxiety. Can improve sleep quality, decrease muscular tension, and has natural antidepressant and sedative qualities.
Eucalyptus: Improves blood flow, is uplifting, helps cleanse the body of toxins and harmful substances, and reduces high blood pressure and pain.
Frankincense: Lowers inflammation and has numerous benefits for improving overall immune function, anxiety and hormonal balance.
Rosemary: Reduces pain through regulating blood flow, helps decrease withdrawal symptoms of caffeine or medications, aids digestion, and soothes an upset stomach.
