Outwitting the Devil
One of my favourite books is, ‘Outwitting the Devil’ by Napoleon Hill. My interpretation of it may not be the same as everyone else: our mind is mostly offering up negative scenarios, based on our subconscious fears which is Devil like because of its lack of positive influence over our consciousness.
Once you realise this is a common theme in most religions and spiritual teachings, that are usually difficult to understand, you can revel in the simplicity of his personal revelation about the Devil being in our mind.
When you are aware of your thoughts, mostly negative, you can do something about them. The first thing to do is stop them. Some mornings while having a shower before teaching I would catch my mind racing with words that would impale my day’s lesson with impunity. To stop this pain I would shake my head and say no, no and it would stop. To say your mind has one of its own is an understatement: it has. Similar to a nagging spouse.
Many people drown it out by watching TV, talking, drinking and being active. The really desperate barrages of negative mental activity happen in bed, drifting off to sleep, upon waking or after a midnight pee.
Meditation can be a good tool to recognise your thoughts, see them come and go and stop them altogether. The classic breathing exercise of 7 in, hold 7 and out for 7 can calm the most troubled mind quickly. It can be done anywhere and at any time.
This is how to do it. Close your eyes. Breathe as slowly as you can through your nose for 7 seconds, then in a peaceful way hold your breath for 7 seconds, then make a small hole in your mouth like you are sucking on your little finger and breathe out very slowly for 7 seconds. Repeat as needed. You may feel disorientated and a little dizzy because your pounding mind and emotions have retreated leaving you in a restful state. Some people hold their breath for 7 seconds after breathing out before starting the cycle again. If you find 7 seconds is too much then start with 3 lots of 5 seconds. For me I do it for 15 seconds each. Some meditation experts say you enter the Alpha mind level when you hold your breath.
Napoleon Hill discovered that the Devil lives in our minds and it changed his life. Many Eastern spiritual practices agree with him. It is good to get the same revelations from Western thinkers like Hill and Allan Watts.
