Thai Women
Forgive my impertinence to talk about women. I shouldn’t but I will.
On my visits to Thailand I have noticed a few things about Thai women that are different to women in the West (Australia).
The main difference I have seen is that many women will do hard labour (the male kind). Planting and cutting rice. Mixing concrete. Work making roads and houses. They need money so they will nearly do anything for it. They also have a lot to say about any topic that traditionally belonged to men like fixing the car and building the house. Then in contrast after a day on the roads, go home, have a shower and dress up like Cinderella at the Logies.
Another one, equally important; they like to talk a lot and don’t care who to. Young girls (from the age of 2)are often found in deep and lengthy conversations with their mothers about what they want for dinner. This gives them amazing conversation skills.
In Thai culture it is normal for men and women to talk to each other about anything. Much the same as a brother and sister might. Even though men are top dogs in the society (on the surface, acting) like most places in the world, unfortunately. Thai women seem smarter and more independent. To marry a Thai woman a man has to give her parents gold and cash. Depending on the status of the family this can be a huge amount of money. On average, 3 years wages.
Someone near the house I was staying shot his son, his fiancé and then himself because he couldn’t raise the money to get married.
This somehow makes a Thai woman more valuable than a man: he is free.
Thai women love dancing, singing, shopping, eating and drinking. All weddings and new house celebrations are much the same. Live or recorded music pumping for hours and hours while the women dance and jive. Some are drunk a lot and some a little. As the night progresses the women start to sing out of tune to robo techno karaoke music, unwilling to share the microphone.
Food is often a communal dinner with family and friends. There is always way too much and the beer and rice whiskey accompanies the subtle flavours of curry, soup and fermented fish. Yes, Thai women love their family more than their husband and usually stay within a stone’s throw so they can eat together every day. The men are different. They feel happy as long as there is someone, anyone, to drink a few bottles of whiskey with after work. Family is everything in Thailand. It is normal to have 3 generations in the same house and all the cousins and uncles as neighbours. Women are the backbone of this amazing culture.
All girls grow up riding motorbikes from the age of 14. They are seen in their thousands biking off to school and home again in the afternoon. Just like a Ford Mustang is a rite of passage for American teenagers so is a sleek 125cc Honda Wave for Thais.
Many Western men are shocked when they first meet Thai women because they are friendly, open and honest. This can be easily misconstrued as love at first sight. Whether you are male or female, when visiting Thailand be prepared to open up and have deep and meaningful conversations with your new found friends while at the same time bopping, hopping and drinking.
I often think it would be great if Western women and men could shake the conditioning of the sexes and be more balanced: expressing both their yin and yang equally much the same as I have seen in Thailand on those special times I have been there.
Thailand has at least 5 different ethnic groups. Northern Thailand used to be the kingdom of Lana and is predominately a mix of new and old Chinese and Laotians. The Northern language is called Nua and it is spoken in some areas of China and Laos. Most Northern Thai people have connections to China. They celebrate the Chinese New Year and have a completely different culture to Central Thailand and Bangkok. Food, clothes and language are all different. Because of the Chinese influence most Northern Thai women like to have a pale white complexion. They will never sun bathe or let the sun touch their skin. In summer you will see every woman with an umbrella, a large hat or even something looking like a Burka to keep the sun off. They also love to dress up in Lana clothes which are colourful sarong style dresses and silk shirts. There are many Chinese that have come to Thailand in the last century, and are living in the mountains. They have come via Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. They are mostly farmers and dress in Chinese costumes and are Christian not Buddhist. Most northern women are slim, wear a lot of makeup and dress fashionably. It is common to see women putting on makeup on buses, in shops: everywhere. They love to look beautiful, doll like, when they go out. I am unsure why? Is it because Thai men love feminine and gorgeous women? Is it because they love to dress up? Is it because there is no hint of feminism in Thailand? Or is it because they have such a natural inner power and self-respect they do whatever they want?
The mountain women wear their more traditional costumes all the time and are usually a bit fat. Common Northern foods are vegetables, herbs (in the form of leaves from a bush) and meat in a watery soup (with some MSG, chillies and garlic) and sticky rice.
In Southern Thailand most people are influenced by Malaysia and Indonesia. Many are Muslim and have dark skin. They speak a southern language which is not understood in the North and vice versa. Their clothes are influenced by their culture and they appear to dress more casually than Northern and central Thai women. The most popular food in the South is a yellow curry. Spiced more with black pepper than chilies. It tends to make your mouth numb.
Many people in the capital city of Bangkok have moved there from other parts of the country for work. Bangkok does have its own language and cuisine though. It does appear to be similar to the North. Most Thai school students use text books written in Bangkok Thai and so is the language in Thai movies and TV. This is confusing because in the North they speak Nua. I am full = katong or im depending on where you were born. This is one reason, apart from Thai being a tonal language, why many Westerners struggle to learn the language: they mix 2 or 3 dialects up at will, without even knowing they are doing it. If you ask a Thai person what is Thai for food? Three people will give you three different answers.
In the East, many people have crossed the borders from Laos and Cambodia and brought their language, food and fashion with them. Similar to the North but not the same.
Like I said I am not that qualified to talk about Thai women. To recap I have noticed they are friendly, capable of doing any job, love dressing up and loads of makeup, dancing, singing and drinking. They especially love shopping and sleeping when they can. They are extremely attached to their families and will take care of their parents when they get old. Yes, it is a written law in Thailand that children will take care of their parents when they get old and sick. The child who takes care of their parents usually inherits the farm. Another interesting law. Land is usually in the parents name, but there is a separate legal document for the house (because families build up to 5 houses on the same block/title). All children are on the house document and parents cannot sell their property without the children’s consent. Yep, you read it right. Thai people are very poor. They share and inherit everything. Without inheriting the old Toyota twin cab, farm and house they would be homeless, jobless and vehicle less. By law property has to be handed down though infinite generations.
The old ways are changing though. There is no money in farming anymore. The farmers with a few acres of fruit and rice used to make a good living 10 years ago. Now the price of rice and fruit is so low children are leaving the family farm and going to work in factories in big cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai. This creates a big problem because they can’t share resources. The children of farmers would normally support their parents when they take over the farm. Now the farmers are getting older and their kids that moved away have to buy their own car, pay rent and don’t have any money left over to support their parents. The pension in Thailand is around $15 which is meant to encourage families to take care of each other, not the government. This may give the government more money to spend on infrastructure like roads and hospitals. Not such a bad idea. You see many women in their 70s, blackened by the midday sun, skinny as a chicken bone under a wide brimmed hat still planting and cutting rice. Then at 5pm, downing a few rice whiskies before peddling home on ancient rust.
Ultimately they are tough, kind, well-spoken and proud as proud. They have little time to feel sorry for themselves because the sun will rise in the morrow and call them into action. A beautiful routine of doing, in step with the sun, moon and Buddha. Whether building a house, cooking sticky rice, repairing the road, planting rice in long rows of neighbours, meditating at the temple or singing and dancing at a party for any reason.
